I am American-Australian. The American part of me has a keen interest (and disbelief) in the gun control debate that is finally coming to the mainstream. The Australian side of me can’t help but shaking my head and saying ‘crikey, America! Get your s**t together!”.
Treehugger today reported on a cool initiatives taken by Uruguay: Bikes for Guns. The program is dubbed ‘Weapons for Life.
America has done many local ‘cash for guns’ programs, but who knows what choices people make when given $100 in cash. I know what choice they’re likely to make if given a bike: riding it.
NB: This is not to be confused with the Russian race that combines cycling and shooting.
Update: I was listening to a fantastic podcast (Planet Money) which took a look at cash for guns programs. Economists concluded that they just don’t work. Very few people actually turn guns in, and the people that do are the ones that don’t even want the gun in the first place (ie they inherited it). Ah well. Good out-of-the-box thinking regardless, Uruguay.
